Glimpses of Truth

Good News

The time is drawing near.  It’s Christmas.  It’s time to make your list and check it twice.  I think I usually buy for folks what I really want myself.  Now, I’m talking about stuff.  However, the perfect Christmas gift would ensure that each would receive a deep, intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father, especially as we begin a new year.  Unfortunately, our “stuff” gifts never make this important relationship possible.

The real gift of Christmas is the Good News of the Gospel – that is God’s desire that we know Him.  David proclaims in Psalm 19:1-2, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.  Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.”

Oh!  How wonderful He is; He is not silent.  The sun, moon and stars, the snowflakes and more declare His glory.  His perfect creation, His seasons show His might.  His earth spins on its axis at a perfect rate of speed.  God is good.  He does it all in order.  We may fret at the thought of global warming, but our God makes His divine wisdom, power, beauty and order evident.

God revealed it to us through Paul in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”  When we try to provide our peace with stuff through MasterCard, we fail.  It should be clear to all of us that the only reasonable explanation for the material universe is a power greater than the universe – a Master Creator who could think and design, with the power to execute His perfect plan.

Isn’t God great?  Yet nature only reveals part of the revelation of God.  Nature doesn’t proclaim Him as holy or eternal or just or righteous.  As awesome as it is, it fails to provide evidence that God in His mercy provided His Son to pay in full for man’s fall, to proclaim His redemptive plan through the person of Jesus Christ.

Now, that’s a real Christmas gift.  The God of Creation (wow!) has provided and preserved His holy words to declare a full and complete revelation of Who He is and how He has fulfilled and will fulfill our deepest need.

What a wonderful season we have to proclaim the Good News!
