Glimpses of Truth
It’s Not Too Late . . .
It’s amazing what the mind can comprehend. That is, some minds. Mine is quite often rather cloudy even on a clear day. But the sun is shining today, so my head is spinning--not out of control, but with the vastness of God’s blessing on my life. God is good. My mind just can’t comprehend how full and complete He is.
I remember reading a little story a few years ago about a young salesman trying to sell a large book containing all types of knowledge about a host of subjects. “Just look at all the things you could learn,” was his statement. The older gentleman to whom he was trying to sell his Book of Facts and Figures said, “Young man, I already know more than I am using.”
I suppose that might be true of all of us. However, for the believer, we need to continue to learn, memorize, and grasp more of God’s Word.
I remember one day, while walking down the hall of one of our local Nursing Homes, I observed a lady sitting in her rocker reading from her Bible. When I paused to look in at her door, I noticed that she would read a verse, then close her eyes. Her lips would move, then her eyes would once again fall upon that same verse by her pointed finger. Yes, this elderly lady still saw the importance of laying hold of the truths of the Gospel.
Now, you may be saying, “He’s going to ask me to start memorizing scripture.” Don’t leave me yet; I’m not through.
We have all been challenged dozens of times before to learn more scripture. Be honest, have we accepted the challenge? Now, maybe you tried, but you either did not see the value, or could not decide what method, or could not find the time, or a host of other reasons. I understand. We all have things to do and places to go. I understand.
Okay . . . forget the fact that our minds are cloudy on clear days, or the fact that we just can’t remember like we used to. Forget the fact that our schedules are filled or that we have tried in the past and it was not very successful.
Forget the fact—no, remember the fact that God has called us to “hide His Word in our hearts that we might not sin against Him.” Of course, that means more than memorizing a few good verses. Certainly it means that we obey the God Who spoke that word. So, in order to obey, we must learn more. Ignorance is no excuse.
Charles R. Swindoll has described it this way and has hit the nail on the head: “I know no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture. That’s right. No other single discipline is more useful and rewarding than this. No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened. Your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your counseling will be in demand. Your attitudes and outlook will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified.”
I think it’s time for us to begin!
