Glimpses of Truth
Finding What We’re Looking For!
Remember when? I listened to a few folks talking the other day. You know, what a person has to say says a lot about him. I love to hear people talk. When people talk (and the last time I checked, we’re all people), they have the ability to accomplish many things. Words can condemn or can set us free. Words tell of the things of the past. Just listen to people talk. I think it’s really impossible to talk long without talking about the past. Remember when?
Isn’t it neat that we can recall things of the past? We reminisce. Along with remembering all the things of the past, we get to throw in our opinion about a variety of issues. Everybody has opinions of what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen and why!
Voices vie for our attention. The world is getting noisier. The result is that many people are getting the wrong instructions. With all the talk, we are in need of discernment--that is, if we are to discover the truth. Our problem lies with how we listen. We listen to our past, which has been filled with the good (that’s good), the bad (that’s bad), and the ugly (that’s worse than ugly). We often mix our past with all the issues of today and base our opinions on our stingy knowledge.
What is the voice which we listen to most? I’m afraid that the world speaks so loudly that other voices get drowned out. The world offers freedom. Really? The world doesn’t possess any freedom outside of national freedom. Is it true that we seek freedom without God? P.T. Forsythe said, “The purpose of life is not to find your freedom. The purpose of life is to find your Master.”
The world – it’s just a mess, morally, intellectually, socially, politically, economically, ecologically (you might add another). All I know is that even the church is getting soft on lots of issues today. Grace is in, judgment is out. And why do you think so? Because man and all his “mess” has defied God! Remember, we are made in God’s image. The problem is that we have become rebels against God, and thus rebels against ourselves. We’ve turned a deaf ear to the voice of God. We’ve created division and war. Even as believers, we’re making up the rules as we go. After all, this is the 21st century, and we want to be politically, socially, intellectually, morally, and righteously correct with man – forget God.
New preachers in old or new pulpits have compromised and are compromising the standards of the past. As believers, we hold the power of the sword, yet are unwilling to wield it. Who will stand up? Satan seeks to steal from us and cause us to be weak.
As I look around and see and hear the sights and sounds of many believers today, my heart is saddened. Yet I suppose God laughs at our calamity. While there is tumult on earth, there is tranquility in heaven. While there is weakness on earth, there is power in heaven. The Kingdom is secure. The King has been established. Jesus is God’s King.
I like to do things my way sometimes, but God doesn’t change. His King rules and overrules. Who will stand with Him amid all the pressure of compromise?
