Glimpses of Truth

Some Things Change

As I get a little older (okay, quite a bit older), I have the privilege of looking back over more things.  Of course, part of my problem is that because I’m a “lot older” (okay, I finally said it), I can’t remember very much of the past.

Ah, the good old days, the golden days.  Things were different then.  But how old you are determines when the good old days were.  Did the flag have 48 stars?  I remember hearing of a young couple who said that their dream honeymoon would be spent at Niagara Falls.  Not today.  That was the good old days.

Hey, I remember buying gasoline for 28¢ per gallon and while (they) pumped it, someone else cleaned my windshield, checked my oil, and swept out my floor mats.  Way back 50 years ago, Ben Hur, Sleeping Beauty and the Shaggy Dog were the top movies.  TV’s big hit was “The Twilight Zone.”  The Vietnam War began.  The first AIDS death occurred in the Congo.  The first pictures were received from outerspace.  Also, the first Daytona 500 was run.  Guess who was born: Barbie Doll herself.

I remember, Cokes were a nickel and a dime would add “2” candy bars.  But what kid had 15 cents?  As I left my childhood, I learned of Fender Skirts.  Remember?  For you car enthusiasts, you may remember “Continental Kits.” They extended the rear bumper and showed off your spare tire (a real tire) inside a beautiful cover.  Wow!

Our old ‘49 Chevy Truck had “Emergency Brakes.”  Later on, it wasn’t an emergency, so they called it a “parking brake.”  That truck had, according to the old folks in that day, a “Foot Feed.”  Go figure.  Besides that, I loved to ride on the “Running Board.”  A seat was a waste of time for a kid, especially when we traveled to the country store only 1½ miles away.  Now, when we went to town and had bought something new and special, we might have bragging rights and tell someone something like this – “This here shirt is ‘store-bought.’”

Think about this:  50 years ago, if you had something described as wall-to-wall, it was special.  We covered up those wood floors with something--paint, linoleum--and rich folks were discovering carpet.  Today we’re pealing it all off to reveal that wood floor.

Times, ways, and styles were all a little different.  A neighbor was talked about quietly as “being in the family way.”  But we learned different words when, twice a year, we went to the “Picture Show.”  Some words and phrases are gone; some are on the endangered list.

What’s for dinner?  Did you mean supper? I think this could go on forever.  Furthermore, I think it will go on forever or until the Lord returns.  Personally, I really don’t understand how today’s high-tech, contemporary, rap society will ever look back and call these the good old days, but sorry to say I guess they will.

But everything changes – whoops – not everything.  God has always been consistent!  He doesn’t improve.  He doesn’t deteriorate.  “The same yesterday and today.”  “I change not.”  That’s reliability.  He’s faithful to all generations.  He is predictable.  He’s surrounded us with all we’ll ever need.    He’s faithful, in control, and we can all depend on Him.

Things are changing!  Not God.  He will change us if we let Him.
