Glimpses of Truth

Opinion?

I listened this morning to a radio program where people call in and express their opinion about a particular subject.  The debate was hot.  Some were for.  Some were against.  Some didn’t care.  Some were biased.  Some prejudiced.  Some showed their colors.  Some - - -

What is an opinion, anyway?  Webster gives us some help.  “A belief or idea held with confidence but not substantiated by direct proof or knowledge.”  So, with that definition, what is my personal opinion really worth?  Not much.  Yet every day I, along with everybody I meet, have an opinion and am ready to share it considering a variety of issues.  Sometimes it’s expressed or covered by different words like, “I’ve decided,” or “I have a strong feeling,” or maybe just “a notion.”  It could come across as, “This is my view or idea.”  We might go so far as to say, “I have this judgment.”  We might be so soft as to express it as a “persuasion.”  If we have a little more backbone, we may express it by saying, “This is my belief.”  And if we want it to carry a little more weight, we just might be bold enough to say, “This is my conviction.”

Now, that sounds a little more serious. When I think of convictions, I think of things which were formulated and formalized possibly upon my knees, or uncovered due to a lot of study.  In my opinion, what I believe about a subject without seeking divine judgment isn’t worth very much at all.

But almost daily I’m now confronted with the issues of this day.  Compromise is more politically correct.  It’s more progressive in a civilized society.  It’s more considerate, more loving, more caring.  After all, this is 2010.  Things have changed.  This is the 21st Century.  Truth!  Morals!  Values!  Standards!  Sorry to say, all these mean very little in today’s society.  I’m afraid we’re just molding or modifying them to fit our own sinful opinions.  It seems to be a lifestyle of no consequences.  Truth today is defined any way you wish it to be.  Lest we look or sound a little old fashioned, we have decided not to preserve, not even practice it ourselves in many cases.  We are making it up, if you will, or altering it so we can be comfortable and fit in today’s world.  We are gradually excusing the truth and replacing it with a weak opinion.  Standing for truth, morals and standards calls for debate and backbone.  It may call for study from the Book of Knowledge.  It may require a personal evaluation of our commitment to the King of Kings.  It may require some time spent in a secret prayer chamber.

We are being spoon fed “compromise” and “your opinion” 24-7 by the Hollywood gang, our political leaders, and even by many of our church leaders.  The message is to modify the truth and get along with everybody.

Well, in my opinion, mankind is wanting to be free.  Don’t you agree?  But what is happening is that mankind is wanting to be free to simply express his bondage.  That’s my opinion, and I’ll close with this one.  As much as I enjoy the talk show and all the opinions, the world (you and I) needs to hear an authentic voice--the voice of God.
