Glimpses of Truth

Let It Rain

At this time of the year, we are always looking for a little extra rain.  The summer rains have a wonderful smell that seems to be different than any other time of the year.  They also wash everything off and add some new life to everything that is alive.

Also, the summer always adds a little dirt and grime to everything we do.  Sometimes on a Saturday, I may change clothes 2 or 3 times when it’s so hot.  By the end of the day, I need a little more than a washing up.

I’ve read about a man by the name of Job who became acutely aware that he was quilty of certain dirty wrongs in the presence of a clean God.  It seemed as though he realized that God had pardoned his transgressions, but now he became conscious of a defilement of spirit and mind.  So great was this battle that he could hardly conceive of cleansing power adequate to deal with it.  It made him ask this question:  “Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?”  And immediately he answered, “Not one.”

As we look back with the light of the New Testament and a more complete revelation, we see more than Job did.  Today we can understand that our Lord has made ample provision, not only to deal with the filth of sin, which requires pardon, but to deal with something that Job was so terribly concerned about in his day—the cleansing, the daily cleaning, the daily fellowship that we realize is necessary for our Godly walk.

The daily exposure to this world has a way of getting us dirty with the grit and grime of all that touches us.  Just living in this evil-dominated place is a difficult problem.  This world is influenced by a rebellious generation.  We must admit that we listen to what the world says.  We watch what the world does.  We take this worldly information, receive it, process it, and often it becomes a part of our minds and thoughts, and as a man thinketh, so he is.  That’s right; we become dirty and defiled by them.

We become defiled because of the influence of the old carnal nature within us.  Now, if you go and hide yourself from the world, you will never have that problem.  WRONG!  Even in isolation our evil Adamic nature can find enough to get dirty.

Satan knows how to communicate to our weakest points.  He treats us the same way he did our parents.  He polluted their hearts and their minds.  He made them doubt.  That’s a terrible, dirty defilement.  It penetrates the entire person.  Don’t we all need a cleansing?  Don’t we all need a cleaning?  The first step in receiving the necessary daily cleansing is coming to a realization of our need.

Then we need the cleansing of the Word.  God’s word has a way of making us clean unto God.  God is concerned with our innermost needs, so He gives us His word to guide us.  And if received into the depths of our hearts and allowed to do its mighty work, it will keep us from sin and will keep sin away from us.  Let it rain, Lord!
