Glimpses of Truth
“Still In Charge!”
Once when the grass was greener, when the days were brighter, when there were not so many problems, life sure was more enjoyable. We all love to see the bright eyes of a small child. We enjoy the cheerfulness of those little busy and energized bodies. They’ve not encountered many discouragements or disappointments. They’re not discouraged because all their hopes and dreams haven’t come to pass. Sin has not uglied their minds. They’ve not even considered whether or not they should glorify God.
Among the pressures in this life, we sense a great need to meet the Master of this life and all its issues. We begin to realize that the meeting is important, but we understand that the meeting must change our future - - our daily walk and our eternal destination.
The songwriter Isaac Watts put it this way:
“O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.”
I guess when it gets down to it, it’s love--God’s love to us, our love toward Him, and the love we share with family and friends which counts most. I’m thankful that daily I’m keenly aware that God, my Maker and Keeper, has His loving arms around me. It’s that love and grace which keep me going. Times often get tough, especially for some. Boy, I wish sometimes I knew why! But in reality, I know it’s enough to just trust in God. That’s not a trite statement, but a real one.
It was Charles Wesley who penned these words, found in most of our hymnals:
“O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace.”
So what’s occupying, taking up your days? I’m afraid we’ve fallen into a pit, a trap. The frenzy of all the things to do, the places to go, the issues to deal with have obscured the things which are most important. Personally I encounter issues which are so minor compared to so many others. And quite often I allow them to take me for a spin. My vision becomes dim. I don’t see, possibly because I wasn’t looking at, the hand and plan of God. I miss out on the education which was designed with me in mind. Therefore, I’ve missed out on future strength which I’ll need. Struggles are God’s design to bring us to Himself. Charles Haddon Spurgeon put it this way, “Somewhere or other in the worst flood of trouble there always is a dry spot for contentment to get its foot on, and if there were not it would learn to swim.”
So when life seems to be aimless, then it’s time to aim again, to refocus, to understand that the pieces of the puzzle are all in God’s hands. He is the Great Designer. He is able to bring everything into correct focus. Suddenly - Yesterday? No, but quietly – all in His plan. The people, places, events, issues--everything is capable of coming together in a meaningful form when we keep in mind Who is in charge. Overnight? No. Next week? Probably not. When? God is putting the “puzzle” (to us) together. He’ll frame it some day, all in His time. So regardless of how dim the view may be today, just remember: He was in charge yesterday; He is in charge today; and thank goodness He’s in charge of tomorrow.
